What is Relational Wisdom Life Coaching

If you’ve heard of “Life Coaching” before, you may be thinking, “I thought that was for entrepreneurs and CEOs.”

Life coaching is a methodology for empowering people to reach their goals and has indeed found application in those areas, but it can be applied to any area of life where you want to grow or improve, including relationships.

How Do We Use RW Life Coaching?

At The Missing Peace we use Relational Wisdom Life Coaching to help people to pursue the goal of becoming more relationally wise in all areas of life. Relational Wisdom may be defined as your ability to discern emotions, interests and abilities in yourself and others, to interpret this information in the light of God’s Word, and to use these insights to manage your responses and relationships successfully.

  • Perhaps you have a supervisor, employee, or coworker who is a challenge for you and you hope to develop the ability to handle those situations more satisfactorily and productively.

  • Perhaps you have a teenager at home, and all of your efforts to communicate wind up in frustration.

  • You might be divorced and want to do a better job of navigating the inherent messiness of co-parenting.

  • Maybe after years of marriage, you and your spouse have lost the ability to communicate in a meaningful way.

  • You might have tensions with a neighbor and need to address some concern with them.

All of these situations and many others can benefit from developing Relational Wisdom. In each situation, you can benefit from better self-awareness, a better ability to view things from the other person’s perspective, and a better handle on the wisdom God has provided through scripture.

What Can I Expect?

In Relational Wisdom Life Coaching, a trained life coach will work with you to help you define some realistic goals for a challenging relationship situation and develop some achievable and relevant action steps to get there. Then, they will help you assess your progress and adapt as you apply what you have learned. Relational Wisdom life coaching is not about telling you what to do, but about empowering you to use your faith along with what you understand about yourself and the other person to engage them constructively.

A typical Relational Wisdom Life Coaching session flows through the following four parts:

  1. Reflection: Establishing Goals and Assessing Progress - Each session begins with a look at your goals and the progress you are making as you pursue them. In your first session, you’ll set some series goals that you want to pursue during our time working together. In some way, these goals should address a relationship concern you are facing. In the first part of each session we’ll look at your progress and give you a chance to refine your goals as you learn from the process. Where you make progress, we’ll celebrate with you and where you need help, we’ll help you understand the obstacles you face and refine your plan.

  2. Learning: Generating Awareness - In the second part of each session, we’ll try to help you expand your awareness in three areas: self-awareness, other-awareness and God-awareness.

  3. Planning: Recognizing Insights and Developing Action Steps - In the third part, you’ll develop a short set of action steps based on any insights that you have gained during the session. We’ll help you craft clear and measurable action steps that you believe will move you closer to your goals. These steps may be a stretch but should still be attainable. We’ll also help you think carefully about your ability to achieve them within a timeframe you choose.

  4. Application: Taking Ownership - In the last part, we’ll review your confidence in accomplishing your action steps and capture the key takeaways that you want to remember.

Each session will follow this flow and over the course of multiple sessions, our aim is to help you converge on some deeply meaningful goals that you have set for yourself.
